Heat-recovery Boilers and Steam Turbine Installation at Kc-33 Hrebinkivska Gas Compressor Station (Urgenoi-uzhgorod Pipeline)

Sector

Electricity generation using waste heat energy

Proponent/project Owner

Kc-33 “Hrebinkivska” of the Urengoi-pomary-uzhgorod Pipeline, Poltava Region

Background

Gas compressor stations are powered by gas turbines using gas drawn from the transmission pipeline. At present, only very minor use is made of the high-temperature exhaust gases emitted by these gas turbines.

Project Goal and Ghgs Targeted

Reduce emissions of CO2 by using waste heat to generate electricity. Emission reductions of nearly 150,000 tons of CO2 equivalent per year can be achieved by implementing the project. Once successfully implemented, the project can be replicated at each of the compressor stations.

Technical Summary

Retrofit heat recovery boilers, steam turbines and turbo-generators at gas compressor station in order to generate electricity from waste heat and sell to the national grid. This will increase the efficiency of the existing gas turbines and reduce GHG emissions from other single-cycle generating plants. Utilization of exhaust gases at six compressor units will create an additional 30mw of installed generating capacity, which would produce up to 200 million kwh and save 80,000 tons of fuel equivalent.

Estimated Cost

The retrofitting of one turbine is estimated at $ 500,000 – $ 700,000. The expected payback time is 8-10 months, based on selling electricity to the grid. The operating costs are estimated at $ 18,000 per year.

Status and Financing

The proponent welcomes financing/credit proposals for the development of а feasibility study and implementation of the project, including equipment leasing. The proponent would also consider creating а separate enterprise for the project.
