Background

The company started producing "Donbass" domestic refrigerators in the mid-60s, and was one of the three manufacturers of domestic refrigerators in Ukraine. In the early 1990s the company became а privately owned Open Joint Stock Company and part of the "NORD" Group. The NORD Group unites 15 enterprises located in 5 regions of Ukraine with 15,000 employees. The main products of the enterprises are home appliances, including refrigerators, washing machines, and home air conditioners. The Joint Stock Company "NORD" is а core enterprise of the NORD Group and has 5600 employees and produces refrigerators of two trademarks: NORD and OCEAN. NORD manufactures and assembles all of the units in its factory. The 400,000 units produced each year are sold in Ukraine and exported to the CIS, Eastern and Western Europe, and Latin America. The factory has its own research facility which develops improved models with their further commercial introduction.

Project Goal and Ghgs Targeted

NORD plans to manufacture new refrigerator models with special insulation materials that will reduce electricty requirements by 50%. Given that the company plans to manufacture 500,000 units each year, it is expected that the company will be able to achieve 500 Mwh savings per year over 10 years. It is estimated that these savings will reduce GHG emissions by 14 million metric tons of CO₂.

Estimated Cost

The preliminary project estimation is Us$ 2.5 million.

Status and Financing

NORD is seeking а partner to provide either а long term credit to purchase the required equipment or on the terms of financial/operational leasing. NORD is open to any suggestions on the investments needed for equipment purchase. The preliminary feasibility study is available in both Ukrainian and English
