Dniprodzerzhinsk community is joining forces to reduce city input to global climate change

Climate change mitigation and local level initiative

Global climate change is one of the most grand present-day environmental problems. Extreme weather events are getting more and more frequent and, therefore, climate-saving measures are increasingly discussed on international, national and local levels.

August 8, 2002 - A round table entitled “Global climate changes and participation of Dniprodzerzhinsk in international climate-saving programs” took place in the city of Dniprodzerzhinsk.

The round table was initiated and held by the Dniprodzerzhinsk public environmental organization “The Voice of Nature” and Kiev office of the Us-based non-governmental organization

“Alliance to Save Energy” under support of the Dniprodzerzhinsk local department of environment and natural resources.

The round table in Dniprodzerzhinsk enabled the city community to open а dialogue on reduction of greenhouse gases emissions in the city and discuss opportunities for Dniprodzerzhinsk participation in international climate-saving programs that might provide necessary information, expert and financial support. Among them MUNEE (Municipal Network for Energy Efficiency), LEAP (Local Environmental Action Program) and Cities for Climate Protection campaign coordinated by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (Toronto, Canada).

The main result of the round table is the decision to establish а coordination council to develop а local action program on climate change and assist in its implementation. The leadership in the council was delegated to “The Voice of Nature” environmental organization. Representatives of the local department of environment and natural resources expressed their willingness to support activities of the coordination council. Any representative of local stakeholders can be а member of the council.

Round table participants have decided to appeal on behalf of the local community to the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine to promote investment of public funds saved through energy efficiency measures in further development of energy efficiency.

Round table resolution with the above decisions was signed by representatives of local administration, public organizations, business, industry, scientific institutes and state agencies resposible for environmental protection and public health issues.

The round table in Dniprodzerzhinsk is one of the activities implemented within the information campaign “ Future Climate without Threat to Life”, carried out by the Ukrainian NGO Climate Change Working Group. This network is uniting more than 25 environmental organizations from 11 oblasts of Ukraine. The goal of the information campaign is to make ordinary citizens aware of the climate change problem and to promote ratification of the Kyoto Protocol by Ukraine.
