Rivneazot CO2 Capture and Process Upgrade

Sector

Fertilizer and chemical industry

Proponent/project Owner

Open Joint Stock Company Rivneazot, Rivne City

Background

The enterprise was founded in 1965 to produce nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers. In 1995 the enterprise was reorganized into а joint stock company, with 43% of stock belonging to the State, and the balance to physical persons and legal entities. The enterprise is one of Ukraineъs major producers of mineral fertilizers. The production process requires the use of apatite (calcium phosphate), which is supplied from Russia, and natural gas. In the process of producing ammonia nearly 500,000 tons of CO2 are emitted into the atmosphere every year. Over the years the enterprise has generated at its dumps nearly 15 million tons of waste. Introducing new technologies will enable to use this waste for the production of new mineral fertilizers.

Project Goal and Ghgs Targeted

Sequestration of 150,000 t/co2 eq./yr emissions produced during production of phosphogypsum by capturing CO2 and producing new types of mineral fertilizers using carbonic gas in the process.

Technical Summary

Carbon dioxide from ammonia production will be mixed with ammonia in the pipeline. Phosphogypsum from the production of phosphoric acid and delivered from storage in the form of pulp interacts with ammonia carbonate in extracted and filtered solution of ammonia sulfate and is transferred into the “ammophos” shop where it is evaporated, granulated and dried to а marketable product. CO2 in this project is bound in compounds for further use in the form of lime or lime-ammonium nitrate. The estimated project lifetime is 40 years. The company has prepared the technical part of the business plan (in Ukrainian).

Estimated Cost

According to а preliminary estimate, Us$ 12,470,000 are needed to implement the project.

Status and Financing

The owner welcomes proposals regarding а medium- or long-term credit or equity participation.
