NGO network on climate change

A significant number of Ukraineъs Environmental Ngos have shown great interest in becoming involved in finding solutions to the climate change issues facing Ukraine. In 1999, an NGO Working Group on climate change (NGO WG) was set up. NGO representatives began networking among themselves to share climate change information, develop their own position regarding the climate change policy and are willing to work closely with the Government of Ukraine in order to elaborate а national climate change policy.

A National Conference on Sustainable Development was held in Kyiv from 20 to 22 November, 2002. The Conference was organized by the Academy for Educational Development and supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Regional Environmental Center (Rec-kyiv). Approximately 200 participants, including representatives from Ukrainian Ngos, civil soiety organizations, GOU, local and national authorities, managers from private and state-owned enterprises, scientists and mass media took part in the Conference.

During October 1 - 14th the Ukrainian NGO Working Group on Climate Change was conducting the "Stop Global Climate Change" public awareness tour. (Press release)

On August 8, 2002 - A round table entitled “Global climate changes and participation of Dniprodzerzhinsk in international climate-saving programs” took place in the city of Dniprodzerzhinsk.

On July 12, 2002 - A roundtable entitled "Global climate change and city participation in climate protection programs" was held in the municipality of the city of Yenakievo, Donetsk Oblast.

On October 23, 2001 а Preparatory Workshop in Light of Upcoming Cop7 Meeting in Marrakech was held, initiated by the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Serhiy Kurykin. The NGO WG took an active part in discussing the most important for Ukraine issues to be addressed at the Cop7. A WG spokesman presented the NGO suggestions concerning the Ukraineъs position at the UNFCCC Cop7.

On June 15, 2001 in Kyiv, Ukrainian Ngos organized а global climate change action. The purpose of this event was to attract public attention to the problem as well as to urge Ukrainian leaders to take mitigation measures more actively. In particular, the NGO climate change working group representatives proclaimed an open letter addressed to the President, Parliament and the Government of Ukraine. October 20-21, 2000 - Representatives of 23 leading non-governmental organizations attended the Third Climate Change Meeting of Ukrainian Ngos held at the Kiev offices of the Alliance to Save Energy. The meeting was sponsored by the US Agency for International Development and aimed at preparing for the Sixth Conference of Parties (Cop6) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held in November 13-24, 2000 in the Hague, the Netherlands. At the end of the meeting an NGO position paper on Cop6 agreed and signed by the meeting participants, was sent to the Vice Prime Minister Myhailo Hladiy, Chairman of the Inter-ministerial Commission on Climate Change.

July 31, 2000 - а group of about twenty NGO representatives sent an appeal to the Government of Ukraine and the international donor community aimed at increased participation of NGO community in formulating national and local climate change policies.
